Case study: Matthew P.
Background: Matthew was no slouch! He was valedictorian of his Senior class, a successful swimmer, student leader, outstanding science student, and an excellent test taker, having earned the 99th percentile on every standardized test he had ever taken. And he had ambitions! Big ones!
Our Approach: We met for the first time during his Junior year to discuss leadership roles, relationships with teachers that he could develop, and the right course selection to keep him on track for an engineering major. We started working on his college list, and he worked steadily on test prep for his SATs and Subject tests. He took any suggestions I offered to heart.
The summer after Junior Year, his testing was complete, his college list was ready, and he got to work! He applied to a variety of very competitive to moderately competitive universities. Matthew worked diligently, staying on top of deadlines, applying to every scholarship offered by each school, and really researching what they were looking for in a candidate. Though he was applying to engineering programs, his artistic bent was a side of him we decided he should highlight on his application. Throughout the summer, he put in countless hours working on a personal project… a modern-day suit of armor. He designed it, and did all the metalwork himself. By the time his applications were due, he was able to submit a digital version of his design and pictures to the universities on his list. Theatre had also been an important part of his development, and he wrote essays that brought his experiences there to life.
Outcome: His senior year was enjoyable and relaxing because all of his applications were sent off by September 1! In the end, from 9 original applications, this wonderful young man was admitted to five, waitlisted at 3 (of which two more eventually admitted him), and rejected from only one. He received multiple very generous scholarship offers. Most importantly, he received a coveted acceptance letter from top choice. Going the extra mile and creating something above and beyond just good grades and test scores gave him the edge he needed for even the most competitive colleges to open their doors!
